Consultation and Treatment An initial consultation lasting about two hours will take place at your first appointment, and the practitioner will take a full medical history. Any physical problems you have will be discussed, as well as any emotional stresses you are having or have experienced, as these can have a great impact on your physical health. The consultation also includes a physical examination. Forming a good relationship with your practitioner is an important factor in the success of your treatment. Once a picture of who you are and what is troubling you has been established, appropriate treatments aimed at your individual needs will be selected. The first treatment lasts from an hour to an hour and a half, and each subsequent treatment takes friom forty five minutes to an hour. Each patient responds differently to treatment, and long standing problems may take longer to heal than recent ones. You will need, on average, four to six treatments before you can expect a noticeable improvement in your condition. Some people may take more than six treatments before they start to get better but for others it occurs from the first treatment onwards. Treatment conforms to the British Acupuncture Council's Codes of Ethics and Safe Practice. Strict confidentialty and hygiene rules are enforced and only disposable single-use needles are used.

How Acupuncture works Very fine needles are used to stimulate a patient's own energy at points situated along energy pathways, called meridians. The meridians run up and down the body, connecting different parts of the body with one another. The needle may therefore be inserted somewhere else along the meridian, rather than near the site of pain. The insertion of the needles into acupuncture points, which relate to particular emotions and organs of the body, balances the energies of mind, body and spirit, so that chi flows smoothly, and activates the healing process. The History of Acupuncture The Chinese and other Eastern peoples have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and maintain good health for about 3,000 years. Stone needles were originally used, and later bronze, gold and silver needles. The first medical account of acupuncture was 'The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine' which dates from about 300 BC. Acupuncture is rooted in the Daoist philosophy of change, growth, balance and harmony, and this text outlines the principles of natural law and the movements of life - yin and yang, the Five Elements, the organ system and the meridian network along which acupuncture points are located. There are different traditions of acupuncture, all with their origins in the Far East and all to a greater or lesser extent taking as their source ancient Chinese texts and practice. Together they form an unbroken line of tradition going back at least 3,000 years and representing an awesome body of knowledge about the human being in health and ill-health. The discipline of Five Element acupuncture is based upon the teachings of J R Worsley, who was among the first to introduce acupuncture to this country. He is the founder of acupuncture colleges here and in the United States. How Can Acupuncture Help You? Acupuncture can be used to treat many physical conditions, including backache, headache, irregular periods, sinusitis, gynaecological problems, skin conditions, M.E. (chronic fatigue syndrome), digestive disorders, muscular and joint pain, asthma and stress, to name but a few. Many emotional or psychological problems can be effectively treated by acupuncture such as anxiety, depression, addictions, phobias, irrational or obsessive behaviour, eating disorders, lack of confidence and low self esteem. You can still benefit from acupuncture without suffering from any particular ailment. If you are feeling off–colour or out of sorts, perhaps experiencing difficulties at work, or unhappiness in a relationship, then acupuncture can help you cope better. Acupuncture treats the whole person (not just the symptoms they are experiencing) on a physical, mental and emotional level. This means that treatment of physical problems also affects the way you feel about yourself. As well as a greater sense of wellbeing and enhanced enjoyment of life, acupuncture can be an extremely effective and drug free form of pain relief. You will also find your immune system is better able to withstand flu, colds and other minor infections, and if you do fall ill, you tend to suffere less badly and recover more quickly. Many people continue to use acupuncture as an effective form of preventative medicine.
